INT.
THEATER - DAY
XEV
enters the theater proper, which is nothing more than a black painted room.
About a dozen fans (all women except for two guys)
sit on apple boxes on either side of a long mud-filled trench. At one end of
the trench is a gravel pit in front of a proscenium arch. At the
other end of the trench is an unlit bonfire. The
fans all seem possessed of a kind of religious fervor. One wears a
shirt with Kai’s picture on it, and waves
several 8x10s of him in the air. Another is surrounded by Kai dolls
and is furiously knitting another. A third is
scribbling love notes on a
stack of her panties and lobbing them onto the stage. They all stare at Xev with
extreme
suspicion.
So then Xev walks in, and all eyes follow her. The fans actually turn around
towards her, watching her as she walks past, to
the last crate, and sits down. Xev makes a face, and looks away...
and then the lights dim, performance starts, and
LiveKai comes down the red rope in the next
scene.]
Xev seats herself on the first available box. Recorded hand drums and the lovely
Yo-way-yo of the single
transverse flute found in Japanese Noh theater productions are
heard. All peer up at the ceiling as Living Kai,
dressed only in a diaper,
his entire body caked with white Kabuki chalk [and a red St.George’s cross
painted on his
chest], lowers himself upside down on a rope. He is bunched up in a
ball, slowly unfurling himself like a
blossoming flower as he
recites lines from HENRY V. Some of the text is done ‘straight’, some is
chanted and
sung
according to Noh theater conventions.
Living Kai:
“If we are marked to die
we are enough
To do our own country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honor.”
The small crowd swoons. The fans blow kisses at him, mouth the lines along with
him, shiver and quiver in
adoration.
One
woman, with a too short skirt, spreads her legs and licks her lips in invitation
as Living Kai tilts his head in her direction.
XEV is distracted by all of the hoopla as she tries to keep her focus on Living
Kai, who slowly flips himself to
standing.
Xev sighs in longing as she takes in his bizarre appearance.
DELETED SCENE:
LIVING KAI passes through a thin sheet of water under the proscenium arch. He
stands in the gravel pit, and
then plunges into the
mud-filled trench.
[The mud scene was actually a deleted performance of LiveKai’s]
[ He surfaces from the mud trench wearing a soldier’s helmet and his green
loincloth, recites some monologue while
in the mud, then crawls out over the gravel. A fan reaches out to
him and hands him the candle with which he
lights the bonfire, and sits back down.]
Living Kai: Co
ntd:
“We few, we happy few, we
band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother, be he
ne’er so vile
This day shall gentle his
condition”
The fans imitate some of his gestures and shout out some of the words.
(This part of the scene is on the finished EP)
Living Kai (CONT’D):
“And gentlemen in England
now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here
And hold their manhoods
cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon
St.Crispin’s day.”
As he finishes, he lights the bonfire dramatically.
He then launches into a one man
version of the battle between the English and French forces, complete with the
miming and bare foot
stomping common to Noh. It all looks patently ridiculous… but doesn’t stop
Xev from
applauding wildly with the
others.
Scene 27
DELETED SCENE:
INT. THEATER - DAY
The audience has left the theater, save for two fans, a guy and girl, who have
remained behind. They crouch on all
fours, licking the stage
where their revered one was performing. [They are actually in the gravel pit,
collecting bits of
tomatoes that were previously thrown
at Living Kai during the performance, and putting them in plastic bags.] A
single wooden table [big crate] has been set up off to one side,
where XEV and LIVING KAI -- now in street clothes -- eat pickled
cabbage and uncooked rice out of plain wooden bowls.
Xev is clearly not enjoying the meal, and
what's more, her eyes have glazed over listening to Kai speak.
LIVING KAI:
[with
his little dog, Goose, by his feet as he talks, stroking the dog and feeding him
bits of his own food]
“...Essentially my work -- the fusion of classic narrative text
with the more declamatory elements of Japanese Noh and
Bhutto stylings, is a
reaction against what I perceive as insidious recidivist tendencies
in the contemporary theater scene.
Whereas most stage artists
are embracing ever more linear, ever more mainstream, ever more cinematic
templates, I
choose to redefine for my audience the very notions of form;
challenging them to extricate meaning from what is
admittedly theatrical subterfuge, and inviting their participation
in the construction of a radical new perception based on what I consider to be
tangible expressionist principles.”
[It’s during this scene that Living Kai leans down and tries to ‘smooch’
the dog Goose, who then bites his lip, which makes them omit a scene at the end
of the episode where Xev kisses Living Kai]
One of the fans coughs. Living Kai looks over to both of them with disdain.
Living
Kai:
shouts,
"Hey, show's over, folks! Yeah?!",
and waves them off] They
catch his gaze, avert their eyes, and scurry out of the space.
XEV:
“Those people really like to watch you.”
LIVING KAI:
[glaring]
“Ah, the fans. They're
just confused. They are victims of our shallow popular culture whose fascination
with the artist has
superceded identification with the art. They suffer a paucity of
intellectual involvement and disassociate from any
expressive endeavor not presented to them in the form of readily
digestible pablum. I despise them.”
XEV:
“Oh. I thought you were really great.”
Living Kai snorts derisively and lights up a cigarette.
LIVING KAI:
“Greatness is not
something one attains, rather something one allows. Only through a sustained
dedication to the craft
and by forsaking the crushing distractions of the material world
can one ever hope to become a proper vessel for the
truths of the ephemeral plane.”
XEV:
“Is that why you don't cook this stuff?”
LIVING KAI:
[rolls eyes] “The actor does not cook. He
acts.”
XEV:
“So where does the actor sleep, then?”
LIVING KAI:
“I eat, sleep, work, live
and breathe here, in this concrete cube called a theater. Why would I threaten
what is already a
tentative connection to the muse by residing outside of its
geometry? That would be presumptuous, a spit in the face of
the creative process.”
Xev looks deeply and sensuously into his eyes. She reaches over and takes his
hand in hers.
XEV:
“I'm feeling a little creative, myself.”
Their gazes lock for several moments, then living Kai abruptly stands and starts
to walk away. [He's leading the dog on a
leash, saying, "Come
on, Goose!"]
XEV:
Where are you going?
LIVING KAI:
“To regurgitate my food. It was weakness to
eat on the same day as a performance.”
He leaves the stage as Xev picks out a large piece of cabbage from her bowl and
stares at it with less than enthusiasm.
Scene 29
INT. THEATER - NIGHT
XEV and LIVING KAI sit in the gravel of the playing space. Kai grimaces as he
fires staples into the soles of his feet with a
staple gun. [Actually, Xev
walked in on him as he was stapling his feet, then sat down with him.]
XEV
“Stop! Why are you doing that?”
LIVING KAI
“The actor must understand pain.”
She rips the stapler out of his hand and tosses it away.
XEV
“I would like you to understand pleasure as
well.”
She moves into him until they are face to face.
XEV (CONT’D)
“Kai, you don’t know
this, but I’m a love slave, and we’ve known each other for thousands of
years. I’ve been trying to get
you to want me all that time, but you couldn’t because you were
dead, and now you’re alive, and we’re together, I want
you to love me, right here, right now.”
Living Kai studies her carefully.
LIVING KAI
“I am not above indulging
in the pleasures of the flesh, but I have committed myself to remain celibate
for the run of the
show. During this time every molecule of my essence must be
funneled towards the realization of the theatrical art. To
allow it to be spilled in a frivolous manner is to allow weakness
and failure.”
XEV
“How much longer does the show run?”
LIVING KAI
“Two months, unless my grant is extended,
and then six months.”
XEV
“I’ll wait.”
LIVING KAI
[arrogantly] “Of course. Now I must retire.
To sleep, perchance to dream.”
XEV
“I have nowhere to go. Can I stay here with
you?”
LIVING KAI
“Suit yourself.”
XEV
“Then let’s go to bed.”
LIVING KAI gestures to the gravel they’re sitting on.
XEV (CONT’D)
“Oh. I’m sure we’ll be very…
comfortable.”
Kai lays himself out on the gravel and closes his eyes.
LIVING KAI
“The actor does not need comfort.”
Xev sighs and watches Kai as he drifts off to sleep. Then: She starts to twitch,
and tremble… and get very dizzy. The
room starts to spin as everything goes to black. [LK walked up to
the stage and spread out a tatty blanket on the bare
floorboards, lying down next to Goose.]
DELETED SCENE:
Scene 30
INT. THEATER - NIGHT
CLOSE on Xev as her eyes fly open. She sits up and finds that she is now back in
the audience, sprawled on one of the
straw mats. As before, she
is completely disoriented, and reacts to a horrible taste in her mouth.
Living Kai is in the middle of a performance. As he speaks tomatoes fly at him
from a self-operated electrical fan, which
propel him back through the
quagmire of mud.
LIVING KAI
“And be it death
proclaimed throughout
Our host to boast this day or take
The praise from God which is
his only.
Is it not lawful, and please your majesty, to tell how many is
killed?
Yes, captain; but with this
Acknowledgement, that God fought for us.
Yes, my conscience, he did
us great good…”
Xev sees the exact same GROUP OF FANS riveted to Kai’s work. Sensing something
amiss, she glances over to the nearest
mat. There she sees a chewed up heap of distinctive clothing
belonging to one of the fans we have seen previously. But
instead of a person there is
only a puddle of blood soaked into the mat. Xev shudders. A second pile of
nearby clothing
catches her eye, again recognizable as something worn by one of the
fans, and also sitting atop a puddle of blood. Xev
shudders harder.
And in a far corner, gazing out from the shadows, SOMEONE (DEAD
KAI, barely discernible) is watching her….
Scene 45
INT. THEATER - NIGHT
CLOSE on Xev as her eyes fly open. She rises in a state of now familiar
disorientation and scans around, seeing that she
has again woken in the
theater in the middle of a performance.
As he speaks, LIVING KAI is propelled
by the tomato-spraying fan back through the curtain of water towards the rope he
descended on.
LIVING KAI
“Now, fie upon my false
French! By mine honor, in true English, I love thee Kate:
By which honor I dare not
swear thou lovest me;
(suddenly switching to GERMAN, bellowing
lines from FAUST)
Go hence and seek yourself
another slave! What! Shall the poet take that highest right, the Right of Man,
that Right which
Nature gave,
And wantonly for your sake trifle it away?”
Xev notices that she is the only one in the audience, and shudders as she sees
two piles of bloody clothing on straw
mats in front of her. She
remains riveted on them until DEAD KAI suddenly sits down beside her.
KAI
“Hello Xev.”
XEV
“Kai!”
She hugs him, but Kai’s gaze has become fixed on Living Kai stomping about the
stage. Living Kai turns his head in Kai’s
direction, and their eyes lock. Living Kai breaks for a moment and
rolls his eyes - one fan tribute to many. He quickly
refocuses with extra vigor.
XEV (CONT’D)
“Kai. Strange things have
been happening to me. There were two people in here before, and now…
(gesturing) There’s just
this. And I’ve been
blacking out and when I wake up someone is gone and I feel bad in my stomach.
I’m worried.”
KAI
“The Cluster Lizard part of your physiology
is undergoing a version of its reproductive cycle.”
XEV
“What?!”
KAI
“Cluster Lizards
experience a form of estrus only once every seven years. During that period they
become very…
aggressive, eating everything in sight. At the end of the cycle,
she also eats her mate. Later she eats the eggs of other
mothers, and often some of her own.”
XEV
“But I’m a human love slave, not a
Cluster Lizard!”
KAI
“You are human, but you have aspects of a
Cluster Lizard.”
XEV (stands, fearful and angry)
“No! This can’t be happening to me!”
KAI
“I would disagree.”
He points to the piles of bloody clothing.
KAI (CONT’D)
“I’ve been observing you. I saw you
become a lizard and devour those people.”
XEV
“And you didn’t stop me?!”
KAI
“Why would I?”
XEV
“Because… because… of
course you wouldn’t! But I don’t believe you! I’m not that much of a
lizard, and I know my own
body! I’ve found love with
him… you… only alive. It’s going to be work, and nothing is going to get
in the way!”
KAI (gesturing to the bloody remains)
“I cannot agree.”
He gets up and starts to leave.
XEV
“Where are you going?”
KAI
“To find Stan. We can meet you back here
after you have eaten your mate.”
KAI looks at his living self.
XEV
“Don’t you care about what happens to
him?”
KAI
“No.”
KAI turns to leave.
XEV (beat)
“Kai?”
KAI
“Yes?”
XEV (gesturing to
Living Kai)
“What
do you think about his… your....
acting?”
Kai watches his living twin perform a moment longer.
KAI
“The dead do not think… about acting.”
He leaves.
DELETED SCENE:
[This scene explains the plywood and nails
you see at the end of the episode that made no sense before]
Scene 52
INT THEATER - NIGHT
The theater is empty save for XEV and LIVING KAI in simple street
clothes. She watches as he pounds
nails through a
piece of plywood.
XEV
“What are you making?”
LIVING KAI
“My new bed. It’s clear
to me now that gravel is for poseurs and rock stars. Performing in German only
served to illustrate
what a glib and shallow charade my work has become. I don’t
deserve to pick an artist’s nose, much less claim myself to
be one. I must access my true creative core even if it kills me!”
XEV
“Speaking of killing, you didn’t happen
to notice the audience getting eaten did you? By a big lizard?”
LIVING KAI
“I have no awareness of what happens in the
audience during a performance. I saw no lizard.”
XEV (unconvincing)
“I knew Kai was wrong!”
She moves into Living Kai and grabs him by the shoulders.
XEV (CONT’D)
“Here’s the deal. I know
you said you’d never ‘do it’ during a show, and I said that was okay by
me. But I lied. I want you,
Kai, on the gravel, on the
nails, I don’t care. But I can’t hold out any longer, do you hear me?! I
have to have you now!”
She kisses Living Kai passionately. He gets into it for a moment, but then
breaks it off.
LIVING KAI
“I see. You’re the Whore in the
Temple.”
XEV
“The what?”
LIVING KAI
“You heard me. Leave.”
XEV (shaking him)
“You listen to me. You talk too much, your
play is boring, and I am not a who-“
Before she can complete the word, Xev staggers back. She starts to cramp, shake,
get dizzy… And then all goes black.
Scene 53
INT. THEATER - NIGHT
CLOSE on Xev as her eyes fly open. Once again she is nauseous and disoriented.
She sits up, looks around… and sees
Goose’s chewed up fur
heaped up in a puddle of blood.
XEV
“Oh no… oh no… Kai…? Did I…? Of
course I did! I am in estrus…”
She breaks down a little, holding her head in her hands, moaning. Eventually she
is able to collect herself, and allow
herself a look at the pile of bloody rags that was recently Living
Kai.
She slowly gets up to
look at what's on the table above her head. She is met by the horrific sight
of what's left of LIVE KAI, which is little more than a pool of blood and some hair. She vomits.]
XEV:
“ Kai? “
[She picks up a
clump of hair and strokes it. The look on her face is heartbreaking.]
XEV [whispering]:
“ Oh, Kai…what a terrible way to end a
relationship.”
[DEAD KAI continues to watch her, and it almost seems like there's an expression
of pity on his face, standing at the back of the theater, watching in silence
from the shadows. He turns and leaves.
XEV sinks to the floor, sobbing.]
